A Liberdade negyed utan kisetaltunk a Paulista Avenue-ra, ami Sao Paulo uzleti negyedenek a sugarutja, kabe mint Londonban a Bank station kornyeke.

Akiko was a colleague of mine at Sony and she came to a business trip to Sao Paulo this week. It gave me the opportunity to see her and although originally I wanted to take her to the Ibiapuera park (Central park of Sao Paulo) we changed our mind due to the pretty cold weather. Instead of going to the park, we visited Liberdade district (or so called Japantown) which was not far from Akiko's hotel.
Liberdade gives home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan in the world. In addition to Japanese, there are significant populations of Chinese and Koreans who also live in this district. It is served by the Sao Paulo Metro, so we took it and got off at Liberdade station.
On that day Tanabata (or as also known: Star Festival) was celebrated. Tanabata celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar.
The most popular customs relating to the festival is to write wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo. We saw such wishes written mainly in Portuguese however Aki saw some written in Japanese too.
The streets of the Liberdade were tremendously busy due to the fact that it was lunchtime when we arrived there and most of the people were eating at one of the streetfood stands. Because of this we could walk very slowly but in the end we managed to find a table at a Rodizio type sushi restaurant where really delicious meals were served.
Following the festival we walked to the Paulista Avenue which is one of the most important avenue in Sao Paulo and where there are a large number of financial and cultural institutions.
Despite of the cold weather lots of people were walking down the avenue and we saw loads of skateboarders sweeping the bike path.
We stopped to have a coffee later and Caio had churros for afternoon snack.
We had such a great day! I thought the weather would ruin our plan but fortunately it didn't start raining so we could spend our time walking the streets of Sao Paulo and chat a lot. :-)
