Hello from Santos!: A Santista

Considering the size of Brazil, Santos cannot be called one of the largest cities in the State of Sao Paulo, however the biggest seaport in Brazil and Latin-America is placed here where half of the Brazilian`s foreign trade takes place.

The port itself is about 5 km from the open sea and can be reached via Santos channel.

People who born in Santos city just call themselves as "Santista", in the same way how people from Sao Paulo city call themselves as "Paulistano", or people from Rio as "Cariocas".

Here is a short list of what a typical Santista is like and hopefully later on I can add my own experiences as well:

1.) Many people think that living in a coast city like Santos is equal to go for swimming and walking on the beach everyday but even people like to thing that it`s true, it isn`t...unfortunately. Most of the people get to the beach on the weekends only even for a short walk; they just work for too long hours to get there before 6pm, before sunset, which is about at this time all year.

2.) Santistas are very proud of the bike path that follows the edge of the beach, canals and reaches the center. They are very annoyed though by events that close the beach promenade and cause congestion in the city, such as triathlons and cycling.

3.) Cyclist are willing to run over people who are parading the route - hence better to pay attention all the time to avoid accidents.

4.) They don`t like to be called Paulista. (Paulista = people who born/live in Sao Paulo STATE. Paulistano = people who born/live in Sao Paulo CITY). They prefer being called just Santista.

5.) They really hate traffic jam that occurs on the motorway called Anchieta-Imigrantes System on long weekends. In situations like this, a real Santista descends or ascends the mountain grumbling about the injustice of having to use the Anchieta for the Paulista (ops, São Paulo) is always benefited from the slopes of Imigrantes. Of course, they also complains about the toll price.

6.) Not everyone takes up publicly, but most people love and can sing all the songs of Charlie Brown Jr. Loving or hating the band style Chorão, city dwellers are proud to hear the name of Santos in interviews and in the lyrics.

7.) When they are asked where they live, they does not say the district, but the Canal. (Santos is divided by 7 Canals that are more than a hundred years old.)

8.) They always want to give a geography lesson for those who confuses other coastal beaches with Santos (never speak about Boqueirao Santos if you are in Praia Grande).

9.) They know that they use the personal pronoun "you" in the wrong way, but loves to talk like that.

In Portuguese "you" is "voce" but in some of the states "tu" is used. In Santos "voce" is preferable but for example my mother-in-law, who is from North of Brazil, likes using "tu" as well. It caused a funny situation once. She made a vegetable soup to me as she knew I liked vegetable soup. She wanted to express that she made soup especially for me and conversation was as below:

She: Eu fiz esta sopa para tu (pronuncing "para tu"-t, as "patu") (I made this soup for you)

Me: Pato que? (A duck what?)

She: Eu fiz esta sopa PARA TU! (still pronuncing PATU at the end of the sentence)

Me: Voce fez sopa PATO para mim?? Que tipo de pato? (Have you made duck soup to me? what kind of duck?)

By the end we figured out what the other intended to say and laughed a lot at the pronunciation.

10.) The majority of children, especially girls, have already made figure skating lessons while most of the adults are or has been a member of a club of the city, such as tennis, the British and the International Regatta.

11.) A real Santista have already been skating, riding bicycle or tricycle in Frog Square.

12.) Over the weekend, walking in flip-flops all day and doing nothing (or just going for shopping, go to restaurant or cinema ...) is the best program for most of the people. If they have kids visiting Aquarium and the Orchid is basic.

13.) During a walk on the beach people always take coconut water or sugarcane juice that they buy in one of the kiosks. (I personally always have either Guarana or Fanta Uva for pasteis)

14.) Any football celebration runs at the Independence Square, which is called "heart of Gonzaga".

15.) Any local can explain in detail how to get to the Vila Belmiro, even those who never entered the stadium of Santos. It is the biggest stadium of Santos city and gives home of Santos Football Club where Pele or Neymar started their career.
